I'm trying to calibrate a webcam camera and I am using both of OpenCV and a matlab app for that but I'm confused.

After that I tried to calibrate a stereo camera using different OpenCV code and the error is about 2.7 but with the matlab app after optimization is about 0.4.

Reprojection errors are a very good indicator of accuracy. But if you want a more independent verification, try measuring a planar object of a known size and see how close you get. Alternatively, you can measure any kind of object of a known size with a stereo camera.

This is not a Matlab specific question, but I'm using Matlab tool so hoping somebody else can shed some light. I have a camera looking at the ground at some fixed angle. Periodically a rectangular object will pass through the field of view in a straight line (eg, left to right, more or less) like car driving down the road with lane markers passing.
What I want to know is how far a point on the object is based on which row it is on the image with reference to a zero row near the bottom of the image. Since this is a pretty controlled setup with basically a triangle, I think I can do a straight calibration of pixel to distance, even with lens distortion, since that will be built into the calibration. However, I've been looking at more general and elegant methods like from robot vision: http://www.vision.caltech.edu/bouguetj/calib_doc/ BTW, I think this is similar to the built-in Computer Vision toolbox functionality, but which we do not own the license to that toolbox.
